Magna Carta 1215: Celebrate 800 years of justice – and your liberty – with Joglaresa!
Joglaresa represent rebellion in medieval music, challenging supreme and arbitrary authority. With medieval harp, fidel, percussion, bagpipes and voices, Joglaresa performs songs that challenge the supreme authority of kings, criticise the clergy and which highlight the lives, loves, imprisonment and taxation of ordinary folk (or barons) at the time of the Great Charter.
The Bodleian holds three of the surviving manuscripts of the 1217 Charters, the new and improved versions of the original Magna Carta. Issued during the reign of the Henry III when he was only 9 years old, they bear the seal of his appointed guardians, William Marshal and the Papal Legate to England, Guala Bicchieri. The great seal of Henry III was finally attached to an even later edition of the Magna Carta now held in the Bodleian – the 1225 Charter of the Forest.
