Lincoln College is unique amongst Oxford colleges. It is the only college to give organ scholars the opportunity to run a fully auditioned choir which sings just one service a week. The standard of chapel music at Lincoln is consistently high, with organ scholars finding themselves at the heart of a thriving musical community. Under the supervision of the Chaplain, the Lord Crewe Junior Research Fellow in Music, and with the support of eight choral scholars and exhibitioners, the organ scholars gain holistic experience of Oxford chapel music. The Lincoln organ scholarship is not just about choral training, conducting and accompanying. Organ scholars can shape the choir through their choice of repertoire and can plan their own choir tours and recordings.
The College supports organ scholars wholeheartedly. The Hollingsworth (Senior) Organ Scholar is awarded an annual scholarship of £500, and the Junior Scholar is awarded an annual scholarship of £350. The College also pays for organ and conducting lessons for both scholars who are guaranteed accommodation in college for the duration of their degree. Their rooms are two of the best sets available for undergraduates and there is an upright piano in each room. The magnificent Chapel organ was built by William Drake in 2010 and is available for practice throughout the day and evening. There is also a grand piano in the Oakeshott Room and a clavichord, both of which are available for use.
In September 2019, Lincoln College will seek to appoint an organ scholar for admission in 2020. We welcome applications from students coming straight from school as well as students on gap years. Organ scholars may read Music, English, Engineering, or Biochemistry.
Prospective organ scholars are encouraged to get in touch or even visit the College to meet with the Chaplain and organ scholars before making an application. More information about organ scholarships can be found here.
There can be up to eight choral scholars and exhibitioners in the choir at any time. There is no quota for any one part and no restriction on subjects studied. Scholars (Lincoln College students) and exhibitioners (students from across the University) receive an annual award of £100 and are offered free individual singing lessons. It is envisaged that they will take a central role in the life of the choir and that they will also be active in the wider musical life of the College. There is no separate application process; scholars and exhibitioners are selected by audition and interview from amongst the members of the choir. Please get in touch with the Chaplain or the other organ scholars if you would like to know more.
